The road to a successful harvest starts before the first seed bag is even opened. For Indiana corn and soybean grower Gary Hendrix, the season kicks off with a visit from his local ag retailer, Ben Wiatt, at Keystone Cooperative. Together, Hendrix and Wiatt evaluate product performance to help determine what will be planted the following year.
“Gary and I meet a few times during harvest to go over the wins and losses of the year,” Wiatt says. “We digest yield data from the trials we’ve done, along with trials conducted by some other farmers in the area. We’re able to identify which hybrids and varieties are responding to certain environments and crop protection selections and how they perform. That’s what the foundation of our plan is based on.”
After making final seed decisions and getting equipment ready for the season, Hendrix starts the planting process by preparing his soybean acres. Before getting seed in the ground this year, Hendrix applied Kyber® Pro herbicide, a preemergence soybean herbicide in the Corteva Agriscience portfolio. Kyber Pro herbicide offers exceptional effectiveness on acres of Enlist E3® soybeans. This compatibility provided Hendrix with a long-lasting residual in his fields of Brevant® brand B243EE™ Enlist E3® soybeans, a variety that he has planted more of each year for the past three seasons. Hendrix explains that the performance and weed control he gets from early maturing Brevant brand Enlist E3 soybeans is the main reason he continues to plant more.
“I prefer short-season varieties to get an earlier harvest. My acres of B243EE soybeans grow well, and they yield well,” Hendrix says. “In years past, it felt like you had to go to a fuller-season variety to get high yield potential, but Brevant seeds has the performance bred into early maturing soybeans. So, I continue to increase how much I plant.”
New to Hendrix’s fields this season is Brevant® brand B08R32AM™ corn. Plant health is a leading priority for Hendrix, especially on his corn acres where disease continues to be an annual hurdle. One reason Wiatt recommended this hybrid is the proven “response to fungicides and natural resistance to tar spot.” In the first few days after planting, Hendrix found that this product delivered exceptional early season vigor — a good sign of a stable plant and high yield potential.
“Emergence is extremely important to me for my corn,” Hendrix says. “It suggests that a crop can handle certain environmental stresses. Brevant seeds is proving that early emergence sets up a strong start for a healthy plant.”
After planting, Hendrix and Wiatt scout fields and work together to prepare for any necessary herbicide and fungicide applications. As the season progresses, check back in to Brevant.com to learn more about how they are achieving on-farm goals.
